Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia is the gateway to Guanacaste’s beaches, and it’s much smaller and calmer than San José’s airport. Picking up a rental car here is straightforward if you know how it works.

Quick answer: Rental companies are off-site. After customs, exit the terminal and find your company’s rep with a sign; a free shuttle takes you to their office a few minutes away. Budget 45–75 minutes from landing to driving.

How pickup works at LIR

  1. Immigration and customs — often quick, but several flights arriving together can mean long lines in high season (December–April).
  2. Exit the terminal and look for the rental representatives holding signs in the designated area outside.
  3. Shuttle to the office — most are within 5–10 minutes along Route 21.
  4. Paperwork and inspection — have your license, passport, credit card and (if you’re declining CDW) your card’s coverage letter ready. See our insurance guide.

Before you leave town

  • Groceries: Liberia has big supermarkets on the way out; beach-town stores cost more.
  • Cash: Get colones from an ATM for tolls, parking and small sodas.
  • Fuel: Stations are plentiful around Liberia; fill up before heading to the Nicoya Peninsula.

Local tip: Guanacaste’s dry season is hot and windy. If you land after 3 pm, stick to short drives (Coco, Tamarindo) and save the long ones for the morning.

Returning your car

Arrive at the rental office 2.5–3 hours before an international flight. LIR’s check-in and security lines get long on Saturdays and Sundays in high season.

Bottom line

LIR is the smart airport for any Guanacaste or northern Nicoya trip. Pickup is simple — find your rep outside, shuttle to the office, inspect the car — and most beaches are within 1.5 hours.
