Which car? SUV recommended
Potholes, steep grades or short gravel stretches. Ground clearance helps. Main roads: Route 1 south → Lagarto turn-off → Route 606 via Guacimal.
From Liberia, the most reliable way up to Monteverde is to drive south on Route 1 and take the same Guacimal road (Route 606) used by people coming from San José. It’s slightly longer in kilometers than the gravel shortcuts through Las Juntas or Tilarán, but far smoother.
Expect 2h 45m to 3h 30m. The climb is paved almost all the way, with steep hairpins and cloudy sections near the top.
