Renting a Car in Costa Rica: Real Cost Calculator

See what a Costa Rica rental really costs once mandatory insurance, CDW, fees and tax are added — before you get to the counter.

Estimates use typical 2026 counter prices from major Costa Rica agencies. Exact prices vary by company and season — always ask for an "all-inclusive quote with mandatory insurance" in writing before you book.

Why the online price is never the real price

Costa Rica requires third-party liability insurance on every rental, and many booking sites leave it out of the advertised rate. Add collision coverage, airport fees and 13% sales tax, and a “$12/day” deal typically becomes $45–70/day. Read the full explanation in our insurance guide.

Our rental checklist

  1. Ask for an all-inclusive quote in writing, including mandatory insurance and taxes.
  2. Decide before you land whether you’ll use a credit card coverage letter for CDW.
  3. Check your credit limit for the security deposit.
  4. Pick the car for your toughest road, not your easiest.
  5. Video the car at pickup, including tires, windshield and fuel gauge.
