CAR

Which car? Any car

Fully paved. An economy car or sedan is fine. Main roads: Route 1 south → Cañas → Route 142 via Tilarán → around Lake Arenal.

From Liberia, the route to La Fortuna swings south to Cañas, climbs to Tilarán and then follows the northern shore of Lake Arenal — one of the most beautiful drives in Costa Rica, with the volcano growing bigger at every bend.

It’s paved all the way, but the lake road is narrow and winding, with potholes and occasional one-lane sections where the shoulder has collapsed. Allow 3 to 3h 45m and don’t rush it: there are great cafés and viewpoints along the lake.
