Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is in Alajuela, about 20 km west of downtown San José. It’s modern and efficient inside — but the moment you walk out of arrivals you’ll be greeted by a wall of people offering taxis, shuttles and “help”. Here’s how to glide through it.

Quick answer: No rental company has cars at the terminal. After customs, walk outside the arrivals exit and look for your rental company’s representative with a sign; they’ll put you on a free shuttle to an off-site office 5–15 minutes away. Ignore anyone who approaches you first.

Step by step after landing

  1. Immigration and customs. Allow 30–60 minutes, more when several international flights land at midday.
  2. Skip the “rental desks” inside. Some counters in the arrivals hall are booking desks. If you already have a reservation, you don’t need them.
  3. Exit the terminal. Outside arrivals, rental reps wait holding company signs, often in a designated area across the pickup lane. Look for your company’s uniform or sign.
  4. Take the shuttle. Shuttles are free and run every 15–30 minutes. The ride to the office is usually 5–15 minutes.
  5. Do the paperwork. Expect 30–60 minutes at the office: contract, insurance decision, deposit, and the car inspection.

Common trap: People with lanyards or polo shirts who ask “Which rental company?” and offer to walk you to the shuttle — then ask for a tip or steer you to a different company. Politely decline and find the official rep yourself.

Taxis: official vs pirate

The official airport taxis are orange (“Taxi Aeropuerto”) and leave from a marked stand outside arrivals. They use a meter (called the “maría”). Unofficial drivers (“piratas”) offer rides in private cars at negotiable prices; they’re not insured for passengers.

Ride-hailing apps like Uber and DiDi operate in Costa Rica and are widely used, though pickups at the airport are more restricted than in town — drivers usually meet passengers in the departures area or nearby.

Inspecting your rental car

  • Video everything: a slow walk-around including roof, bumpers, wheels and windshield, plus the dashboard showing mileage and fuel.
  • Check the spare tire and jack — flat tires are common on rural roads.
  • Make sure the car has the vehicle registration (tarjeta de circulación) and the current RTV inspection sticker; police can ask for both.
  • Confirm the fuel policy: most Costa Rica agencies rent full-to-full.

Your first drive

If you land in the afternoon, consider staying near the airport (Alajuela has many hotels) and starting your road trip the next morning. Costa Rica gets dark around 5:45–6:15 pm all year, and driving rural roads at night is the number-one mistake first-timers make.

Heading out right away? The most common first drives are to La Fortuna (about 3 hours), Jacó (about 1h 45m) and Manuel Antonio (about 3 hours).

Returning the car before your flight

Plan to be at the rental office at least 3 hours before an international departure: 20–30 minutes for the inspection, the shuttle ride, and the airport check-in. Traffic around Alajuela and on Route 27 can add an hour on Sunday afternoons.

Bottom line

Walk past everyone who approaches you, find your rental company’s rep with a sign outside arrivals, and take the free shuttle. Inspect and video the car, get your insurance sorted before you land, and try not to start a long drive in the late afternoon.
