CAR

Which car? Any car

Fully paved. An economy car or sedan is fine. Main roads: Route 27 → Route 34 (Costanera Sur).

Jacó is the closest real beach town to San José, which makes it a favorite for a first or last night. The drive is short and simple: Route 27 toll highway to the coast, then 20 minutes south on the Costanera.

On a clear weekday it takes about 1h 30m to 2h. On weekends half of San José has the same idea: Friday evening and Sunday afternoon traffic on Route 27 can double the time. If you’re flying out of SJO, don’t plan to leave Jacó less than 4 hours before a Sunday afternoon flight.

Step-by-step directions

  1. 1

    Route 27 west to Orotina

Follow signs for Caldera / Puntarenas on Route 27. The steep San Mateo descent has runaway-truck ramps; keep a safe distance.

  2. 2

    Take Route 34 south

Before Caldera, exit toward Jacó / Quepos on the Costanera Sur.

  3. 3

Cross Tárcoles and arrive in Jacó

After the crocodile bridge the road climbs over a headland with ocean views, then drops into Jacó. The main street (Avenida Pastor Díaz) runs parallel to the beach.
