CAR

Which car? Any car

Fully paved. An economy car or sedan is fine. Main roads: Route 27 → Route 34 (Costanera Sur).

Dominical is a small, laid-back surf town where the jungle meets a wild, wave-battered beach. Getting there is simple: Route 27 to the coast and then south on the Costanera for about two hours.

Plan on 3h to 3h 45m. An alternative through the mountains via San Isidro de El General (Route 2, the “Cerro de la Muerte” pass) exists but is slower and much more demanding — only worth it if you’re coming from the south or want the high-altitude scenery.

Step-by-step directions

  1. 1

    Route 27 west

From SJO follow Route 27 toward Caldera and exit to Route 34 toward Jacó.

  2. 2

    Costanera south

Continue past Jacó, Parrita and Quepos on Route 34.

  3. 3

    Arrive in Dominical

Turn right at the Dominical sign into town. The main street is unpaved and dusty in the dry season.

Hazards to know before you go

  • Dominical's main street is unpaved and muddy after rain.
  • Strong rip currents at Dominical beach — swim only where lifeguards are present.
  • Speed cameras on the Costanera.

Stops worth making

  • Quepos marina

A tidy stop for coffee and a stretch, right off the highway.

  • Hacienda Barú

Wildlife refuge just north of Dominical with trails and a canopy walk.

Local tips

  • Dominical is a good base between Manuel Antonio (1 hour north) and Uvita (20 minutes south).
  • Plan to arrive before dark (about 5:45–6:15 pm year-round). Rural roads have no lighting, few shoulders, and pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the road.
