Dominical is a laid-back surf village between Manuel Antonio and Uvita. The highway is paved; Dominical’s own main street is unpaved and dusty.

About Dominical

Dominical is a small surf village where the Barú River meets the Pacific, about 45 minutes south of Manuel Antonio and 20 minutes north of Uvita. The main beach has powerful waves that draw experienced surfers, and the town keeps a relaxed, backpacker feel with a few streets of cafés, hostels and surf shops. The highway is paved, but the village’s own main street is unpaved and dusty.

Things to do

  • Surfing: Dominical is for experienced surfers on most days; beginners do better at nearby Playa Dominicalito on small swells.
  • Nauyaca Waterfalls: two large tiers with a swimming pool, reached by a long hike or a 4×4 transfer from the entrance on the road toward San Isidro.
  • Hacienda Barú Wildlife Refuge: trails, birdwatching and canopy tours just north of town.
  • Day trips: Uvita and the whale’s tail, or Manuel Antonio, are both under an hour away.

Where to stay

Budget hostels and cabinas are in the village (roughly US$30–100), and lodges with ocean views sit in the hills above Dominicalito and Escaleras. Many hill lodges are on steep gravel roads where an SUV helps.

Practical tips

  • Rip currents are strong. Swim only where locals swim or near lifeguards.
  • Park in guarded or busy spots near the beach and don’t leave belongings in the car.
  • There are small supermarkets and ATMs; for bigger shopping, Uvita or San Isidro is better.

  • Hacienda Barú Wildlife RefugeTrails and canopy just north of town.
