La Fortuna is the small town at the foot of Arenal Volcano and the adventure capital of northern Costa Rica. It’s on almost every first-timer’s itinerary, and for road-trippers it’s easy: paved roads from both SJO and LIR, and most attractions are within 20 minutes of town.

Getting around by car

Everything important sits along Route 142, which runs west from town past the volcano toward Lake Arenal: hot springs resorts, the national park entrance, hanging bridges and the dam. The La Fortuna Waterfall is 10 minutes south of town on a paved (steep) road. You won’t need a 4×4 for any of the classic sights.

When to go

Arenal is in the humid northern zone: it can rain any month, but February to April are the driest. Mornings are usually clearest — plan volcano viewpoints and hikes early, hot springs in the afternoon or evening.

Where to stay

You have two choices. In town you can walk to restaurants, supermarkets and tour offices, and budget hotels start around US$50 a night. Along Route 142 toward the volcano you’ll find the resort hot springs and lodges with volcano views, typically US$150–400 a night. With a car, staying on 142 is easy because everything is a 5–15 minute drive.

What things cost

  • Hot springs: from free riverside spots to day passes of roughly US$40–100+ at the big resorts.
  • Arenal Volcano National Park: around US$15 per foreign adult; buy on the official SINAC site.
  • La Fortuna Waterfall: about US$18–20 per adult.
  • Hanging bridges: about US$25–35 self-guided, more with a guide.

Prices change, so treat these as ballpark figures.

Practical tips

  • Fill the tank in town before day trips to Río Celeste or around the lake; stations thin out quickly.
  • Free hot-spring spots under bridges get crowded at night. Don’t leave anything in the car there.
  • Book volcano hikes and hot springs for different times of day: the volcano is usually clearest early, and springs are best after dark.

How many days should I spend in La Fortuna?

Two to three nights lets you see the waterfall, a hot spring, the volcano park and a day trip.

Is it better to fly into SJO or LIR for Arenal?

Both are about 3 hours away. Choose based on the rest of your itinerary.

How many days do you need in La Fortuna?

Two full days covers the waterfall, a volcano hike, hanging bridges and a hot spring evening. Add a third for Río Celeste or a rafting trip.
