Which car? SUV recommended
Potholes, steep grades or short gravel stretches. Ground clearance helps. Main roads: Route 27 → Puntarenas → ferry to Paquera → Route 160 → Cóbano → Santa Teresa.
Santa Teresa is one of Costa Rica’s most loved surf towns, and the journey is part of the adventure: a highway to the port of Puntarenas, a ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya, and a winding road down the tip of the peninsula.
Door to door it takes 5 to 6.5 hours, depending mostly on how well you time the ferry. The drive from SJO to Puntarenas is about 1h 30m, the crossing about 1h 10m, and Paquera to Santa Teresa another 1h 15m to 1h 30m.
The road is paved to Cóbano. From there to Mal País and Santa Teresa’s main street, expect potholed, partly unpaved sections — very dusty in the dry season and muddy in the rainy season. A compact SUV is the right car; in the heart of the rainy season (September–November) a 4×4 gives you peace of mind on side roads to hillside villas.
Step-by-step directions
- 1
Route 27 to Puntarenas
From SJO take Route 27 west toward Caldera, then follow signs for Puntarenas. Drive to the end of the Puntarenas peninsula to the ferry terminal (Naviera Tambor).
- 2
Ferry to Paquera
Check in with your ticket, line up in the car lanes and follow staff directions onto the ferry. Passengers go upstairs during the 70-minute crossing.
- 3
Paquera to Cóbano on Route 160
A hilly, winding paved road through small villages and forest. Watch for buses and trucks coming off the ferry at the same time.
- 4
Cóbano to Mal País and Santa Teresa
Follow signs for Mal País / Santa Teresa. The road deteriorates — go slow over potholes. At the T-junction, Santa Teresa is to the right, Mal País to the left.
Tolls, fuel & road facts
| Main roads | Route 27 → Puntarenas → ferry to Paquera → Route 160 → Cóbano → Santa Teresa |
|---|---|
| Tolls | Route 27 has several toll plazas between San José and Orotina — budget roughly ₡2,500–₡4,000 total each way for a car (about $5–8). Cash colones in small bills is fastest; most booths also accept cards. |
| Fuel | Fill up in Puntarenas before the ferry. There are stations in Cóbano; Santa Teresa has one small station. |
| Ferry / boat | Puntarenas–Paquera car ferry: about 70 minutes, several departures daily. Expect roughly $25–35 for a car with driver, plus a few dollars per passenger. Buy tickets online in advance in high season and arrive 45–60 minutes early. |
| River crossings | None on the recommended route. Some coastal shortcuts north of Santa Teresa cross rivers — avoid them in the rainy season. |
| Real vs. Google | 5h – 6h 30m in practice vs. 5h 00m on Google Maps, without stops. |
Hazards to know before you go
- Missing the ferry can cost you 2–3 hours — arrive early, especially on weekends and holidays.
- Potholes and unpaved sections from Cóbano to Santa Teresa; dust clouds in dry season.
- Heavy traffic of ATVs, motorbikes and pedestrians on Santa Teresa's main street.
- GPS may suggest coastal shortcuts with river crossings — don't take them.
Stops worth making
- Puntarenas Paseo de los Turistas
If you arrive early for the ferry, try a 'churchill' (shaved-ice dessert) on the seafront.
- Montezuma (detour)
15 minutes from Cóbano: waterfalls and a bohemian village.
Local tips
- Book ferry tickets online in high season (Dec–Apr) and on Costa Rican holidays.
- Alternative without the ferry: drive around via the Tempisque bridge and Nicoya — about 5.5–6.5 hours.
- Santa Teresa has limited ATMs; bring some cash.
- Plan to arrive before dark (about 5:45–6:15 pm year-round). Rural roads have no lighting, few shoulders, and pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the road.
