Which car? SUV recommended
Potholes, steep grades or short gravel stretches. Ground clearance helps. Main roads: Route 27 → Route 1 north → Liberia → Curubandé road.
Rincón de la Vieja is Guanacaste’s volcanic playground: bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, waterfalls and hot springs in dry tropical forest. From San José it’s a long drive — about 4h 15m to 5h — and it makes more sense as a stop on a Guanacaste loop or from Liberia airport, only an hour away.
After Liberia, the road toward Curubandé is paved for a while, then turns to gravel for the last kilometers to the Las Pailas ranger station. A sedan can manage in dry weather, but an SUV is recommended for the bumps.

Tolls, fuel & road facts
| Main roads | Route 27 → Route 1 north → Liberia → Curubandé road |
|---|---|
| Tolls | Route 27 has several toll plazas between San José and Orotina — budget roughly ₡2,500–₡4,000 total each way for a car (about $5–8). Cash colones in small bills is fastest; most booths also accept cards. The last stretch crosses private land at Hacienda Guachipelín, where a small road fee is charged per person. |
| Fuel | Fill up in Liberia; there are no stations near the park. |
| River crossings | None — all rivers are bridged. |
| Real vs. Google | 4h 15m – 5h in practice vs. 4h 20m on Google Maps, without stops. |
Hazards to know before you go
- Gravel and potholes on the last stretch.
- Strong winds in Guanacaste from December to March.
- The park has limited hours and sometimes closes sectors due to volcanic activity.
Stops worth making
- Liberia
The last big town for supermarkets and fuel.
- Hot springs near the park
Several hot-spring spots sit on the access roads — ideal after the hike.
Local tips
- The park requires advance online tickets and closes early (last entry around early afternoon — check SINAC).
- Bring water and sun protection: the Las Pailas loop trail is hot and exposed.
- Plan to arrive before dark (about 5:45–6:15 pm year-round). Rural roads have no lighting, few shoulders, and pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the road.
