CAR

Which car? Any car

Fully paved. An economy car or sedan is fine. Main roads: Alajuela → Route 712/120 → Poás Volcano National Park.

Poás is the easiest active volcano to visit from the airport — perfect for your first morning or last day. The drive climbs from Alajuela through coffee plantations, strawberry stands and dairy farms up to about 2,500 meters.

It takes about 1 hour to 1h 20m. The road is paved but steep and winding near the top. Go early: clouds usually cover the crater by late morning.

Important: Poás is an active volcano. The park sometimes closes or limits visits when activity increases, and tickets must be bought in advance online (SINAC) for a specific time slot. Check the current status before driving up.
