Which car? SUV recommended
Potholes, steep grades or short gravel stretches. Ground clearance helps. Main roads: Route 27 → Route 1 → Route 18 (Tempisque bridge) → Nicoya → road to Nosara.
Nosara — home of Playa Guiones, yoga retreats and some of Costa Rica’s most consistent surf — is deliberately hard to reach, and locals like it that way. From San José, it’s a 5 to 6-hour drive, and the final part is on gravel.
The recommended route crosses the Tempisque bridge to Nicoya, then heads toward the coast. The road out of Nicoya is paved for a while, but the last stretch into Nosara is potholed gravel, washboard-bumpy and dusty in the dry season. In the rainy months (especially September–November) mud and water-filled holes make a 4×4 the sensible choice.
Don’t trust shortcuts along the coast from Sámara or Ostional unless you’ve checked conditions locally: they involve river crossings that rental insurance doesn’t cover.

Tolls, fuel & road facts
| Main roads | Route 27 → Route 1 → Route 18 (Tempisque bridge) → Nicoya → road to Nosara |
|---|---|
| Tolls | Route 27 has several toll plazas between San José and Orotina — budget roughly ₡2,500–₡4,000 total each way for a car (about $5–8). Cash colones in small bills is fastest; most booths also accept cards. |
| Fuel | Last full-service stations in Nicoya. Nosara has a station, but fill up in Nicoya to be safe. |
| River crossings | Not on the inland route via Nicoya. Coastal roads from Sámara or Ostional cross rivers that can be impassable in the rainy season. |
| Real vs. Google | 5h – 6h in practice vs. 5h 00m on Google Maps, without stops. |
Hazards to know before you go
- Rough gravel with potholes, washboard and dust on the last stretch.
- Deep mud and puddles in the rainy season.
- Coastal routes with river crossings — avoid in rainy season.
- Low visibility in dust clouds behind trucks — keep your distance.
Stops worth making
- Nicoya
Last stop for supermarkets, ATMs and fuel.
- Puente La Amistad
The long bridge over the Tempisque River.
Local tips
- Consider flying into Liberia instead — it's about 2–2.5 hours from Nosara.
- Nosara's roads are dusty in dry season: keep windows up and AC on recirculate.
- Many visitors rent an ATV or golf cart locally instead of driving the rental car around Guiones.
- Plan to arrive before dark (about 5:45–6:15 pm year-round). Rural roads have no lighting, few shoulders, and pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the road.
