Which car? SUV recommended
Potholes, steep grades or short gravel stretches. Ground clearance helps. Main roads: Route 27 → Puntarenas → ferry → Route 160 to Cóbano → Montezuma.
Montezuma is a small, bohemian beach village near the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, famous for its waterfalls and relaxed vibe. It’s reached the same way as Santa Teresa: a highway to Puntarenas, the car ferry across the gulf, and a winding road through Cóbano.
Allow 4h 30m to 6 hours including the ferry. The final descent from Cóbano into Montezuma is paved but very steep with tight bends — use first or second gear going down, and check your brakes don’t overheat. A compact SUV is recommended for the steep hotel driveways around town.
