Which car? Any car
Fully paved. An economy car or sedan is fine. Main roads: Route 27 → Route 34 (Costanera Sur) → Palmar Norte → Route 223 to Sierpe.
Drake Bay is the jumping-off point for Corcovado National Park, Caño Island and some of the best wildlife viewing on the planet. For most travelers the smartest way to get there is to drive to Sierpe, park, and take the boat — a memorable ride through mangrove channels and out across the Pacific.
The drive is about 4h 30m to 5h 30m and entirely paved. You’ll need to reach Sierpe before the boat departs (usually late morning or mid-afternoon), so leave San José at dawn or overnight in Uvita.
There is a road into Drake Bay via Rancho Quemado, but it involves steep dirt tracks and river crossings. Rental agencies don’t cover water damage, and it’s genuinely dangerous in the rain. Leave it to locals.
Step-by-step directions
- 1
Route 27 and the Costanera
From SJO take Route 27 to the coast, then Route 34 south through Jacó, Quepos, Dominical and Uvita.
- 2
Palmar Norte
Continue south to Palmar Norte, the last proper town. Turn right onto Route 223 toward Sierpe.
- 3
Sierpe dock
Drive 15 km through oil palms to the village. Park in a guarded lot near the dock and find your boat.

- Boat rides can be rough when the sea is choppy; keep bags in dry sacks.
- The Rancho Quemado road has river crossings — not recommended.
Stops worth making
- Uvita / Marino Ballena
A great place to break up the drive.
- Finca 6 (Diquís stone spheres)
UNESCO site near Palmar Sur with the mysterious pre-Columbian stone spheres, a few minutes off the route.
Local tips
- Pack light and waterproof: bags ride in the open boat and landings in Drake Bay are often wet (on the beach).
- Bring enough cash; Drake Bay has limited ATM access.
- Plan to arrive before dark (about 5:45–6:15 pm year-round). Rural roads have no lighting, few shoulders, and pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the road.
