Driving in Monteverde Cloud Forest

Misty mountain reserves at 1,400 m reached by steep, winding roads. The last climb to Santa Elena is paved from the Pan-American side but narrow and foggy, and the lake road from Arenal is rough gravel. An SUV is recommended, and arriving before dark is essential.
