Puerto Viejo is the heart of Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean: Afro-Caribbean food and culture, reggae bars and palm-fringed beaches stretching south to Manzanillo. It’s reached via Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo and the coast road from Limón — paved all the way.
Getting around
Once there, many visitors park the car and rent bikes: the coast road to Cocles, Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva is flat and full of cyclists. Side streets in town are unpaved.
Weather
The Caribbean has its own rhythm: September–October, when the Pacific is soaked, are often among the driest months here.
