Puerto Jiménez is a small town on the Golfo Dulce and the main gateway to Corcovado’s La Leona and Los Patos sectors. Route 245 into town is paved; the road beyond to Carate is rough gravel with river crossings (4×4 only, dry season only).

About Puerto Jiménez

Puerto Jiménez is the main town of the Osa Peninsula and the eastern gateway to Corcovado National Park. It sits on the calm Golfo Dulce, about 7–8 hours from San José or 2–2.5 hours from Uvita on paved roads. Beyond town, the road to Matapalo and Carate turns rough and involves river crossings.

Things to do

  • Corcovado National Park via the La Leona or Los Patos stations. A certified guide is required, and many tours include transport to Carate.
  • Golfo Dulce: kayaking the mangroves and dolphin-watching boat tours.
  • Cabo Matapalo: surf, waterfalls and wildlife-rich jungle at the tip of the peninsula.
  • Wildlife everywhere: scarlet macaws are common even in town.

Where to stay

Simple hotels are in town (roughly US$40–120), and eco-lodges are scattered along the road to Matapalo and Carate, often with meals included.

Practical tips

  • Fill up and withdraw cash in town. Past Puerto Jiménez there are no gas stations or ATMs.
  • For Carate, a true 4×4 is essential and river levels can stop you in the rainy season. Many people take the local “colectivo” truck instead.
  • Domestic flights from San José land at Puerto Jiménez if you want to skip the long drive one way.
